Default How to tell if an engine is locked up?

I'm looking at an '86 GT and he says that either the starter won't turn the car over or that the engine is locked up. He has put on new headers and says that the dipstick did not seat right after he put that back on and he lost some oil. That is what makes him think it is locked up, but he hasn't had time to check yet.

Taking a ratchet and socket and turning it by the crankshaft should determine if it's locked up I think. If the engine turns without any drag it's not locked up. if it doesn't turn at all it's locked or something is making it not turn. Also make sure that the transmission is in neutral before doing this.

There will be substantial drag from the sheer compression of the cylinders. You'd have to pull all the spark plugs to alleviate this, and there would still be the drag of the rings against the cylinder walls, though not as much as if the plugs were in.

However, if it truly IS locked up; then you will know it...as the crank will not turn at all.
